NORTH EAST - Cecil College soccer could not hold on to a 2-1 half lead on Tuesday evening, surrending seven goals to No. 6 CCBC-Essex over the final 45 minutes for an 8-2 loss.
A mistake by the visiting goalkeeper allowed Izak Battle Jr. to chip the Knights' netminder for early Seahawks lead. Essex responded three minutes later with a goal to tie the contest.
The rest of the first half was largely filled with back-and-forth play until the Seahawks earned a free kick in the 41st minute. Freshman midfielder Bent Althoff stood just outside the 18-yard box and launced a shot that crashed down off of the crossbar for Cecil's second goal of the contest.
Trailing 2-1 out of the break, Essex would come out firing and score two goals in the first 15 minutes of the half. The defending Region 20 D2 champs continued to pound the net over the final 30 minutes, scoring another half-dozen goals before time expired.
The Seahawks drop to 3-4 (2-4 Region 20) after the loss.
