Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short to F.C.C.

Despite a 14-point defecit just before the halftime break, the Cecil College men's basketball team was able to stage a comeback powered by seven three-pointers from sophomore guard Caleb Johnson. The Seahawks were able to regain the lead with thirteen minutes remaining but fell short to the Cougars of Frederick Community College. The Seahawks suffered their first loss to a Region XX Division II opponent and fall to 9-11 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

In a defensive first few minutes, the Seahawks and Cougars remained scoreless until Cornell Corbin found Keyon Givens for a fast break dunk. The Seahawks held the Cougars to their first points off two made free throws with 15:00 left to play in the first half. Unable to stop the Cougars' offense, Cecil College found themselves trailing by 14 points with 0:33 left until the break. Freshman guard Cornell Corbin found himself open beyond the arc to cut the lead to eleven points with one half to play.

The Seahawks initiated their comeback from the start of the second half, outscoring the Cougars 22-10 in the first twelve minutes. Cecil College eventually took the lead with 13:11 left to play off a three-pointer by Caleb Johnson, from Cornell Corbin. Johnson scored 11 of the Seahawks 22 comeback points, including three made shots from beyond the arc. Johnson would go on to drain four more three-pointers, giving the Seahawks a 65-64 lead with just under four minutes to play.

The Seahawks and Cougars traded points until the Seahawks' defense forced a Cougars' missed lay up with 0:12 left on the clock, forcing a Cecil College timeout. Unable to execute the set play, the Cougars converted a turnover into a three-point victory over the Seahawks. Caleb Johnson lead the Seahawks in scoring with 23 points, including going 8-10 from beyond the arc and fueling the Seahawks' almost-comeback. Cornell Corbin tallied 11 points and five assists, followed by an additional 10 points and four assists from Greg Alexander.

Men's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, January 31 when they travel to face Allegany College of Maryland. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
