Bio
Charlie O’Brien has been a cornerstone of Cecil College baseball for over three decades, serving as the head baseball coach. A proud Cecil College graduate, O’Brien’s baseball journey began as a player from 1983-1985. After completing his bachelor’s degree at West Chester University, he spent a year coaching there before taking the head coaching position at Keystone College in northern Pennsylvania. At Keystone, O’Brien established himself as a rising star in the coaching ranks, leading his teams to 136 victories.
In 1995, O’Brien returned to Cecil County and resumed his coaching role, becoming the head baseball coach at Cecil College in 1997. Under his leadership, the Seahawks have amassed more than 600 victories, solidifying O’Brien’s legacy as one of the most successful and influential coaches in the NJCAA. In 2011, he guided the Seahawks to the College World Series, earning the NJCAA Northeast District Coach of the Year title. He was Maryland JUCO Coach of the Year twice and NJCAA Region XX Coach of the Year three times.
His commitment to his players is matched by his dedication to the broader community, where he has volunteered with Maryland Little League and served as a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), as well as working with USA Baseball, the Olympic teams, and the Pan-American Games.
In 2020, O’Brien was inducted into the prestigious NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, an honor that reflects his outstanding contributions to the sport and his impact on the lives of student-athletes. He also served as the Maryland Junior College Baseball Coaches Association president from 2008-2013.
Away from the field, O’Brien is supported by his wife of 30 years, Lynn, and their three children—Charles Jr., Katie, and Patrick—who have been by his side throughout his remarkable journey. A passionate advocate for community college education, O’Brien continues to help students realize their potential as athletes and individuals with a brighter future ahead.
