Stala Shines as Seahawks Defeat Knights

NORTH EAST - Cecil freshman Couper Stala homered four times and Cecil scored a modern program record 27 runs, as the Seahawks defeated CCBC-Essex 27-17 on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks 22 runs in a victory over SUNY Adirondack back on March 16, 2018 stood for six years as the program's modern record (2014-present). The game's 44 runs sits second all-time to the 56 runs scored between CCBC-Catonsville and Cecil during the 2021 season.

Wind gusts anywhere from 15 to 35 miles per hour aided both programs on offense. Cecil's bats took full advantage of the conditions with eight home runs and four doubles.

Stala's big day began in the first, as his solo home run tied the contest. After an avalance of offense from Cecil, Stala would homer again to boost the Seahawks lead to 12-1

Both teams traded blows over the next couple of innings, including a grand slam by Essex which pulled them back within four. Kevin Gamber picked things back up for Cecil with a solo blast in the fourth before Stala stepped up and cranked a three-run bomb to left to make it 19-11 Seahawks.

The Knights came out swinging again in fifth, scoring six runs on four hits and an error. However, Cecil proved they had plenty left in the tank, as Colin Brosh's two-run home run kicked off the bottom of the frame. Four batters later and Christian Crutch would homer to bring home three more. Kenny Scottborgh's walk put Stala back to the dish, and the frosh outfielder responded with his four long ball of the day to end the game via mercy rule.

When the dust settled, Ashtin Keith (1-1) earned the victory from the mound.
