Top 10 Moments of 2024-25
The Cecil College athletic department is proud to present the third edition of its Top 10 Moments series!
No. 1 – Men's Basketball Stuns No. 16 Montgomery to End Regular Season
Cecil College men's basketball had one final trick up its sleeve to end the regular season, taking down No. 16 Montgomery 94-86 back on February 26.
Cecil relied on free throws and points in the paint to get the job done. Jaiden Guy led the Seahawks with 32 points, 28 of which came inside the arc. The sophomore guard chipped in 10 rebounds for a double-double. Shaun Chandler and Javon Jenkins provided crucial production off the bench, combining for 33 points with a 13-19 mark from the line.
The Seahawks held Montgomery to just three points in the final 4 minutes of the first half to seal the win. Cecil's offense scored 11 straight points during the stretch, with a Raptors' three connecting at the buzzer to end the run.
Cecil's victory shook up the Region 20 Division 2 postseason seeding, with the Seahawks jumping up to the No. 2 spot. The Raptors, who sat atop the region for large parts of the season, slid down to the No. 3 seed.
No. 2 – Mullins, Harris Make Cecil Volleyball History
Cecil College volleyball saw two players make history in mid-October. Outside hitter Etta Harris was up first, breaking the single-season program record for kills in a win over Harcum on October 19th. The freshman finished the season as the Region 20 leader with 302 kils, putting her 44 kills away from Cecil's all-time record.
Two days later and sophomore setter Rachel Mullins made history of her own, smashing the Seahawks' single-season and program assists record in a tri-match sweep at RCSJ-Gloucester. The Elkton, Maryland native ended the year with 654 assists in 2024 and 852 for her career.
No. 3 – Men's Soccer Breaks Out in Home Finale
Cecil College men's soccer sent off their six sophomores in style, dominating Delaware County 12-0 in the Seahawks final home game of the season on October 12.
The Seahawks victory marked their seventh of the season, setting a new single-season program record (2000-present). The Seahawks 12 goals and 12-0 margin of victory are also new highs for the program in its modern era (2014-present).
Ronaldo King led the way on offense, scoring four goals while picking up an assist on four more. Izak Battle Jr. grabbed a hattrick and one assist, while five additional Seahawks picked up one goal each.
The result was never in doubt for Cecil, as the Seahawks kicked off the game by scoring twice in the opening fifteen minutes. They would find the back of the net four more times before the half expired, extended their lead to 6-0. Cecil then matched its first half effort with a half-dozen goals in the second.
No. 4 – Baseball Takes Down No. 7 Frederick
Cecil College baseball scored a season high 13 runs in one inning en route to a stunning victory over the No. 7 Frederick Cougars back on April 13. This victory is the Seahawks first over the Region 20 powerhouse since the May 15, 2016.
The two teams traded blows early, with the Seahawks coming out with a 5-3 lead after three. Frederick took over in the middle innings, holding Cecil off the board while bringing home three runs in the fourth and a half-dozen more in the fifth to push ahead 12-5.
Trailing by seven entering the sixth innning, Cecil would explode for 13 runs on 11 hits to bust the game open. The Seahawks batted through their order twice, recorded 10 RBI, and scored three runs on Frederick's defense miscues. The visitors, trailing 18-12, showed fight in the seventh and scored one run before Chris Woods shut the door with a strikeout and a groundout.
Eight Seahawks recorded at least one hit. Justin Weaver finished a single short of the cycle and drove home five to top the Seahawks. Tyler Burger grabbed another three hits and two RBI.
Mike Preske (1-1) snagged the win from the mound, striking out five over 1 2/3 innings of work. Starter Colin Brosh punched out four Cougars over four frames.
No. 5 - Softball Rocks Garrett
Cecil College softball put together two complete performances against Garrett College, cruising through the Lakers 17-1 and 20-4 on March 25.
The Seahawks' 37 runs between the two doubleheaders are its most since the 2017 season, when the Seahawks won 28-1 and 30-0 in a twin bill against Montgomery. Cecil's 17 RBI in game two is also the program's highest amount since 2017.
In game one, secured 11 hits and 15 walks, while allowing just one run on two hits and two walks to Garrett. Sloane Tanner grabbed two triples as part of a four-hit day to lead the offense. Gianna Dougherty (3-1) collected two hits and two RBI at the plate while also striking out nine Lakers from the circle.
Tanner and Dougherty featured again in game two. Tanner led the Seahawks with three hits and three RBI, while Gianna Dougherty collected two hits and drove in three. Tristian Canavan joined the fray with a team high five RBI, four of which came via grand slam.
No. 6 – Men's Basketball Knocks Off No. 12 Monroe CC
Cecil College men's basketball picked up a statement win early in the season, defeating No. 12 Monroe Community College 69-66 in Rochester on November 9. The win pushed the Seahawks into NJCAA's Division 2 Rankings.
Sophomore guard Jaiden Guy dominated the contest, leading the Seahawks with 27 points while adding in seven rebounds and a half-dozen assists. 16 of his points came in the second half. Cecil played excellent defense for the final 20 minutes, limiting Monroe to 23.8% from the field and a 1-for-13 mark from deep.
A late steal by Jermaine Goodwyn set up Ciyon Coates for a bucket to put the Seahawks ahead 68-64 with 1:16 to play. The hosts pulled within two after making a pair of free throws, but Cecil fended off Monroe three-point attempts with 19 and five seconds left to take the win.
No. 7 – Baseball Walks-Off CSM
Cecil College baseball claimed its first extra-innings win back on March 9, taking down the Southern Maryland (CSM) Hawks 7-6 in eight frames.
Seahawks starting pitcher John Smith tossed a clean opening three frames, but ran into trouble in the fourth (one run) and the fifth (five runs). The sophomore battled back in the sixth, striking out two Hawks and forcing a third to line out to end the inning.
CSM's starter faced a similar fate, holding Cecil scorless over the first three innings. The Seahawks scored five runs between the fourth and fifth, then tied the contest in sixth after Brendan Aiken's sac fly scored Franco Riposo.
Colin Brosh took the mound for Cecil the seventh, stranding a CSM baserunner at third with a strikeout for out three. Cecil did not capitalize in the bottom of the seventh, stranding the winning run to send the game into extra innings. Brosh returned for the eighth and slammed the door on the Hawks to give the Seahawks a shot to walk the game off. Riposo would lead off the inning for Cecil, battling through a twelve pitch at-bat before sending pitch 13 over the left field wall to end the game.
No. 8 – Softball Dominates Camden County
After triumphing over Camden County in game one 8-5, Cecil College softball eruputed for 22 unanswered runs to secure a sweep on April 2. The Seahawks 22 runs and 23 RBI were both peak marks for the year and the program's largest amount since 2017.
Cecil set the tone early, plating 13 runs to open the contest. Three additional runs in the second and a half-dozen more in third put the game well out of reach for the Cougars.
Nine Seahawks produced at least one hit and eight chipped one RBI or more. Briana Rebman and Tristan Canavan led with four hits each. The two also combined for 10 RBI, four doubles, and two stolen bases.
Gianna Dougherty showed out from the circle, producing 11 Cougar strikeouts. The freshman right-hander allowed just three hits, while recording three hits of her own at the dish.
No. 9 – Men's Basketball Defeats Division 1 Hagerstown in OT
Cecil College men's basketball rallied from an 18-point deficit, defeating the Hagerstown Hawks 82-76 in overtime on January 18.
The Seahawks got off to a slow start and allowed the Hawks to score 11 unanswered points to begin the game. Cecil would not see its first lead until Shaun Chandler's layup put Cecil ahead 69-67 with 3:30 left to play. Hagerstown tied the game on their next possession to tie the game, but both teams held each other scoreless the rest of the way to send the contest into overtime.
The Hawks drew first blood in overtime with a make from range, but Cecil grabbed the advantange on back-to-back layups via Jaiden Guy and Jeremiah Falko. Another layup from Guy gave way to Falko nailing a three to put the Seahawks ahead by seven with a 90 seconds left.
Hagerstown cut the deficit to five with a minute left but were forced to foul Cecil to stop the clock. The Seahawks hit two of their four attempts, leaving the door open for the visitors. The Hawks did not capitalize, missing a pair of three-point attempts to end the game.
No. 10 – Women's Basketball Wins Home Opener
Cecil College women's basketball hit the floor for the first time in over 1,700 days, holding on for a 71-65 win over the Middlesex Colts on November 12.
The program last played back in 2019-20, when the Seahawks lost a Region 20 Division 2 quarterfinal game on March 5. Cecil's victory was its first since February 22 of the same season.
The Seahawks held a 36-24 lead over the Colts heading into the break. Cecil led by as many as 15 points late in the third, but Middlesex hung around and eventually pulled within three points with a minute to go. A turnover gave the Colts a chance to tie, but an offensive foul put the ball back in the hands of the Seahawks.
Middlesex was forced to foul Cecil late to stop the clock, but the Seahawks drilled their next four free throws to make them pay. A pair of late shots from the Colts fell flat to seal Cecil's first win.
