Seahawks' Comeback Attempt Against Riverhawks Falls Short in Nine Innings

Cecil College baseball's comeback attempt against MD JUCO and Region XX DII rival, the Riverhawks of Anne Arundel, fell one run short in nine innings on Tuesday. In their previous meeting with the Riverhawks, the Seahawks picked up their first conference victory in eight innings by a score of 19-6, with sophomore pitcher Zachary Strong tossing a complete game in the win. Tuesdays' loss drops Cecil's overall record to 2-10-1 and 1-4 in conference action, which occupies the 13th spot in the conference standings including 14 teams.

Despite out-hitting and committing less errors than Anne Arundel, the Seahawks were unable to put more runs on the scoreboard after letting up six runs in the top of the 1st inning due to countless walks, hit batters, and the Seahawks' solo error with sophomore pitcher Joseph Munoz on the mound. Cecil started their comeback with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning after a base hit to left field from freshman shortstop Hector Laguer and a two-run home run over the center field fence from Jaily Paredes that brought both of them across the plate.

After a scoreless second inning, the Riverhawks put up another three runs on three hits in the top of the third to extend their lead to 9-2. The Seahawks were unable to answer back until Solomon Harris grounded-out, but brought Carlos Roman-Delgado home in the bottom of the 4th and a double from Shawn Dulin in the bottom of the 5th allowed Hector Laguer to cross the plate, who previously reached due to being hit by a pitch.

The Seahawks trailed 9-4 after five complete innings, but a three-run homer in the top of the 6th from Anne Arundel's right feilder put the game nearly out of reach. Cecil College answered back with a lead-off solo home run from sophomore first basemen Tyler Robinson, an RBI-double from sophomore outfielder Michael Worthington, and three outs in a row for the Riverhawks' next offensive series.

Anne Arundel would score their last run in the top of the 8th inning and the Seahawks would outscore them, again, with RBI-singles from Worthington and Laguer to make the score 13-8 after eight complete innings. Michael Cesar led off for the Seahawks in the bottom of the 9th and reached first on a walk, followed by an opposite-field homer from Roman-Delgado to bring the Seahawks within three runs. Robinson was walked and Harris reached first on a fielder's choice, when freshman third basemen Andrew Imbierowicz hit another ball out of the park to make the score 13-12. The Seahawks' comeback fell short as the Riverhawks' were able to make the final two outs to end the game.

Cecil College baseball returns to action at home on Thursday, March 28 when they host the Lions of CCBC Dundalk for a single game in another conference and region division match-up. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Brockell Field.
