Seahawks Earn 2019 NJCAA Region XX DII Title

The Cecil College men's basketball team earned the title of NJCAA Region XX DII Champions after their 91-73 win over #1 seeded Potomac State College of WVU. After starting their season 2-8, the Seahawks made the necessary turn around with a win over Monroe Community College on December 14 and eventually went on to win 15 of their next 16 games, including an eleven-game win streak. The region tournament victory qualifies the Seahawks for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Danville, Illinois which is set to start on Tuesday, March 19.

After defeating Garrett College and Community College of Beaver County in the quarter-final and semi-final rounds of the tournament, hosted on their home court, the Seahawks matched up against the top-seeded Catamounds of Potomac State College of WVU. The Catamounts headed into the tournament with a single loss in the regular season and the schools' first ever #1 ranking nationally.

After falling to College of Southern Maryland in last years' Region XX Championship game, the Seahawks came out hungry for a title. Despite letting up the first two baskets, the Seahawks went on a first-half run that gave them a 20-point lead heading into halftime. Cecil shot an impressive 60.5% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc in the opening half of the championship game. Three of the Seahawk's starters - Jacob Falko, Cornell Corbin, and Hassan Corbin - were in double digit scoring after the first twenty minutes of action.

The Catamounts opened the second half with a 17-2 run, holding the Seahawks scoreless until the 12:45 mark, and cutting their defecit to just 10 points, forcing a timeout by head coach Ed Durham. Freshman guard McKale Williams sparked the second half scoring with a three-pointer after the Cecil College timeout and the Catamounts would trail by 10 or more for the remainder of the game.

The Corbin brothers, Cornell and Hassan, finished the day each with a double-double in points and rebounds with 21 points each and a combined 22 rebounds. Shylier Ringgold also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while blocking three shots. Jacob Falko finished with 12 points, three assists, and two steals. Freshman guard Montaze Jefferson finished with eight points while Darell Johnson added three blocks in the victory.
