Seahawks Survive Fighting Owls' Comeback

Cecil College women's volleyball picked up a victory in their season opener after defeating MD JUCO opponent, the Fighting Owls of Harford Community College, in five sets. After statement wins in the first two sets for the Seahawks, the Fighting Owls started their comeback winning the next two, to force a fifth set.

Cecil and Harford traded points in the beginning stages of the first set and Cecil found themselves with a 16-14 advantage at the mid way point. Sophomore Madeline Eckerd delivered three service aces and returners Emily Waldridge and Morgan Mock tallied two kills a piece, giving Cecil the victorious momentum in set one. The Seahawks held the Fighting Owls to just 14 points in the second set to give them a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Despite registering 24 team kills in the next two sets, the Seahawks dropped the next two to the Fighting Owls' late comeback by scores of 24-26 and 22-25. Cecil College started the fifth set with a 3-0 lead with sophomore setter Sarah Blevins serving. The Seahawks would survive one last comeback from Harford before scoring eight of the matches' final 10 points to secure at 15-8 victory in the set and a 3-2 victory for the match.

Sophomore Emily Waldridge led the Seahawks with 14 kills followed by Madeline Eckerd with 13 kills and five service aces in her debut as a Seahawk. Freshman Emily Maser added 14 assists, three service aces, and two blocks for the Seahawks while Sarah Blevins accounted for an additional 17 assists. On the defensive end, libero Emily Ritchie had an impressive showing with 24 digs in the win.

The Seahawks return to action at home with a non-conference match against Delaware Technical Community College on Tuesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m.
