Seahawks Sweep Raptors on Sophomore Night

Cecil College women's volleyball extended their win streak to six games in a row after defeating conference opponent Montgomery College on Thursday, October 12. The victory over the Raptors  on "Sophomore Night" helped improve the Seahawks' record to 10-4 overall and 9-2 in MD JUCO competition. The Seahawks currently occupy the eight spot in Region XX standings and the fourth spot in conference standings, trailing Hagerstown, Frederick and College of Southern Maryland.

Three sophomore student-athletes were recognized before the match on their outstanding careers as a Seahawk. Brittany Atkins has played in 28 matches as a sophomore and has recorded 238 career kills and 69 service aces in her two years of play. Atkins plans to transfer to Wilmington University to continue her academic and volleyball career. Kirra Barrett has tallied 268 career kills, 19 blocks, and 65 service aces. 49 of Barrett's service aces have come in her 14 matches played this season. Barrett plans to transfer to a four-year university to continue her academic career. Cheyenne Burchette has registered 37 digs and 26 assists in her 28 matches as a Seahawk. Burchette plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue her Biology degree.

In three close sets, by scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 26-24, the Seahawks were able to accomplish their fifth straight-set victory this season over the Raptors. Outstanding performers included Brittany Atkins with eight kills and four service aces, Kirra Barrett with 11 kills and four service aces, freshman setter Sarah Blevins with 26 assists and six service aces, freshman Emily Waldridge with nine kills and nine digs, and freshman libero Emily Ritchie with 20 digs.

Volleyball returns to action when they travel to Delaware Technical Community College on Saturday, October 14. The match is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
