Seahawks Upset CSM Hawks In Four Sets

The Cecil College women's volleyball team upset higher-ranked conference opponent College of Southern Maryland in four sets on Tuesday. The Seahawks outlasted the Hawks by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 14-25, and 25-23. Prior to the match, the Hawks of College of Southern Maryland occupied the third spot, out of twelve teams, in MD JUCO standings followed by the Seahawks in fourth.

Determined to prove themselves in conference play, the Seahawks jumped out to an early two set lead. The Seahawks allowed the Hawks back in the match after suffering a devastating 14-25 defeat in the third. The Seahawks were able to squeak by with a two-point margin in the fourth set to earn the victory.

Sophomores Kirra Barrett (19 kills) and Brittany Atkins (14 kils) teamed up to tally 33 of the Seahawks' 46 kills, followed by an additional eight kills from Freshman Emily Waldridge. Barrett and Atkins currently rank in the top ten in kills per set and total kills among all MD JUCO opponents. Freshman setter Sarah Blevins dished out 41 assists in one of her best showings of the season. Blevins currently ranks fourth in assists per set.

The Seahawks improve to 7-4 overall and 7-2 in conference play, surpassing the Hawks of College of Southern Maryland for the third spot in conference standings. Volleyball returns to action at home on Saturday, October 3 at 12:00 p.m. to face MD JUCO opponent Garrett College.
