Barrett Propels Fifth Set Shut Out

In a back and forth match on Friday, September 8, the Seahawks were determined to secure their first triump of the year against conference opponent CCBC Essex. The Seahawks and Knights each captured two wins in the first four sets before heading to what was expected to be a competitive fifth set.

Sophomore co-captain Kirra Barrett opened the set as the Seahawks' server, and stayed there for the remainder of the match. The Seahawks took a quick 6-0 lead after capitalizing off a few Knights attack errors and a Barrett service ace. The fifth set quickly spiraled out of the Knights' control after back-to-back kills from freshman Morgan Mock, assisted by freshman Sarah Blevins. Kirra Barrett ended the set with a service ace, helping the Seahawks to a 3-2 victory over CCBC Essex.

The Seahawks ended the day with 26 team kills, ten of which came from sophomore co-captain Brittany Atkins. Cecil College improves their overall and conference record to 1-1 and will return to action on Tuesday, September 12 at APG Federal Credit Union Area on the campus of Harford Community College. The Seahawks will face the Harford Fighting Owls at 3:00 p.m. followed by the Northern Virginia Community College Nighthawks at 4:30 p.m.
