Volleyball Drops Season Opener in Four Sets

The Cecil College women's volleyball team could not keep up with the experienced Cougars from Frederick Community College on Tuesday, September 5. The conference match up was the Seahawks' first regular season game, compared to the Cougars having three previous matches under their belt.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the first set with a few quick kills and service aces from returning players . The Cougars largest lead came as they lead the Seahawks 9-3 in the middle of the set. Unable to hold on, the first set ended with a score of 25-18 in favor of the Cougars.

Early in the second set, the Seahawks built a 8-4 lead sparked by a service ace from sophomore Brittany Atkins and a kill by Emily Waldridge, assited by Sarah Blevins. Unfortunately, the Cougars were quick to equalize and create a comfortable lead as the result of countless errors by the Seahawks. With a final score of 25-17, Frederick Community College lead the match 2-0.

In a competitive third match, the Seahawks and Cougars remained within one point of eachother until Cecil College gained a 21-19 lead off an Abigail Neal service ace. Leading the rest of the way, the Seahawks converted two late errors into a 26-24 victory in the third set.

The Cougars coasted through the fourth set with seven kills and ended the match with a final score of 25-18 and a 3-1 advantage over the Seahawks. The Cougars improved their record to 2-2 as the Seahawks fell to 0-1.
