Seahawks Hand Cougars First Conference Loss, Improve to 2-2 in MD JUCO

Cecil College women's basketball defeated the Cougars of Frederick Community College, handing their MD JUCO rivals their first conference loss, on Wednesday night. The Seahawks improved to 7-8 overall and hit the .500 mark at 2-2 against MD JUCO opponents.

Cecil and Frederick started the contest struggling offensively, holding each other scoreless in the opening three minutes of the game. The Cougars were first on the scoreboard with a made lay-up, but a made jumper from Destiny Perry sparked the Seahawks' early 13-1 run to gain a 14-3 lead with 1:51 left in the first quarter.

Cecil was last to strike in the first half after Trinity Wailes successfully blocked a Cougars' lay-up, the rebound was grabbed by Haley Krone, she converted the outlet pass to Destiny Perry, who then dished to Kayla Thompson for a made jump shot. The Seahawks headed to their locker room with a 43-22 lead with twenty minutes left to play.

The Cougars' attempted comeback fell short in the second half, despite cutting their deficit to as little as six points as the third quarter came to a close. Another fourth quarter run by the Seahawks gave them their largest lead of 25 points as time expired.

Freshman guard Destiny Perry led in scoring with a career-high 22 points while also grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out six assists, and causing two turnovers. Jadia Jackson and Kayla Thompson recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds while Jayla Smith contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Trinity Wailes and Haley Krone combined for the remaining 10 Seahawks' points in the victory.

Cecil College women's basketball returns to action on Saturday, January 25 when they host the Lakers of Garrett College for another MD JUCO and NJCAA Region XX DII contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with the men's game following immediately.
