Seahawks' Extend Winning Streaks at Home

Cecil College men's and women's basketball each extended their winning streaks by one game with conference victories over Prince George's Community College on Wednesday. Women's basketball has now won two in a row, tying their previous streak earlier in the season, while men's basketball has won their last seven contests, including going 8-1 during the month of January.

In a fight for their fourth win this season, the Seahawks were able to defeat the Owls of Prince George's Community College by a 60-47 margin, marking it the second largest winning spread of the Seahawks' season. Women's basketball improved to 4-12 overall and remained at 1-9 in MD JUCO standings due to Prince George's club status. The Seahawks currently sit in the 13th spot in the conference standings, ahead of Allegany College of Maryland who they defeated on November 28 by a score of 85-39.

Cecil College's offense was fueled by freshman trio Amya Mumford, Tamara Evans, and Kayla Thompson scoring double-digit points. Forward Amya Mumford tallied 18 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Mumford is nearly averaging a double-double for the season with 14.7 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game. Tamara Evans followed with a double-double of her own with 15 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Kayla Thompson with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 steals. Thompson currently leads the team averaging 16.5 points per game.

Cecil College men's basketball followed with a comfortable 75-61 victory over the Owls, keeping their conference tournament hopes alive. The Seahawks improved to 13-9 over and 7-5 in the conference after their seventh straight win and climbed to the 6th spot in the conference standings, out of 15 teams.

After allowing the Owls to be the first on the scoreboard with an alley-oop dunk, the Seahawks would never allow them to regain the lead. Two made buckets from Shylier Ringgold and a lay-up and three-pointer from Jacob Falko in the first two minutes of the game gave the Seahawks a three point lead that would eventually extend to nine by the halftime break.

Sophomore guard Cornell Corbin sparked the second-half scoring for Cecil College and consistent capitalization of Owls' turnovers put the game out of reach for Prince George's. The Seahawks' largest lead, by as many as 17, came at the 0:49 mark on the clock to keep their win streak alive.

Cornell Corbin tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists followed by his brother, Hassan Corbin, and Jacob Falko each with 14 points. Forward Shylier Ringgold had 10 points of his own and collected 8 rebounds.

Both teams look to stay hot when they travel to face MD JUCO and NJCAA Region XX DII rival, Montgomery College, on Saturday, February 2. Tip-offs are scheduled 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m in Rockville, Maryland.
