Cecil College women's basketball picked up their second victory of the season after freshman guard Megan O'Neal hit the game-winning jumper to lift the Seahawks over the Catamounts of Potomac State College of WVU. The Seahawks improved to 2-3 overall with the NJCAA Region XX DII victory and remained at 1-1 in MD JUCO action.
The Seahawks and Catamounts found themselves in a competitive battle on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks took a quick 5-0 lead in the opening minutes of the match, but would trade lead changes multiple times before the half. Potomac State College of WVU started to extend their lead and took their largest lead of 13 points with 1:12 remaining in the first half. The Seahawks would score the next seven points off a three-pointer from Kayla Thompson and a pair of lay ups from Tynaya Segure and Amya Mumford to cut the lead to six before heading to the locker room.
After slowly chipping away at the Catamounts' lead, Cecil College found themselves down six with just over one minute remaining in the third quarter. They were able to spark a 7-0 run to claim a 1-point lead with 8:06 left on the game clock. The Seahawks and Catamounts, once again, traded leads until freshman guard Megan O'Neal scored the Seahawks' last six points on a lay up and two jumpers, including the two-point shot the secured the victory for the Seahawks with 0:34 left in the game. O'Neal finished the game with eight total points.
Freshman forward Amya Mumford had a career high 25-points, grabbed 11 rebounds and collected four blocks. Freshman guard duo Tynaya Segure and Kayla Thompson also recorded double-digit points. Segure tallied and additional 16 rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Thompson dished out nine assists, collected eight rebounds, and three blocks.
Cecil College women's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, December 5 when they travel to face conference rivals, the Cougars of Frederick Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
