Early Lead Slips Away from Seahawks

Cecil College women's basketball experienced their 17-point first half lead slip away in their home opener against the Barons of Rowan College at Burlington County on Saturday. The Seahawks start their season 0-2 against non-region and non-conference opponents.

The Seahawks and Barons were scoreless in the opening three minutes of the contest as a result of competitive defensive sets, until the Barons were the first on the scoreboard with a made free throw at the 7:11 mark. Freshman guard Kayla Thompson would open up scoring for the Seahawks with a made lay up, quickly followed by a defensive rebound and fast break lay up by Tynaya Segure. Thompson and Segure sparked a run where Cecil College outscored RCBC 23-5, giving the Seahawks their largest lead of 17 points with 7:52 remaining in the first half.

The Barons would start to chip away at their defecit before the break as the Seahawks headed into halftime with a 10 point lead and multiple players in foul trouble. Tynaya Segure and Kayla Thompson each had four personal fouls, while Amya Mumford collected three, with the second half still to play.

The Seahawks would score the first three points of the second half, but plagued by fouls on the defensive end and turnovers on the offensive end, the Barons took their first lead of the game at the 1:49 mark in the third quarter. The Barons and Seahawks exchanged the lead for the remainder of the half until the Barons started to pull away in the 4th quarter to secure a 75-57 win over the Seahawks.

Kayla Thompson lead the Seahawks in scoring with 19 points with seven made field goals, including one three pointer. Tynaya Segure followed closely with 18 points in just 23 minutes of action and went 4-7 from beyond the arc, along with tallying two steals on the day.
