Panthers Hand Seahawks Two Conference Losses

The Panthers of Baltimore City Community College came to Cecil College to hand the Seahawks two ten-point losses in the conference. Women's basketball falls to 7-3 in the conference while men's basketball falls to 6-4 against MD JUCO opponents.

Women's basketball faced a slow start as the Panters got out to an 8-0 start off the tip off, forcing a Seahawks timeout in the first minute of the contest. A made layup by sophomore guard Nyjayha Lockwood was the first on the board for the Seahawks, sparking a run that would eventually take the lead. A three-pointer from Nicole Guy-Thomas put Cecil College on top 14-11 with 6:00 remaining in the first quarter.

The Seahawks took their largest lead of 13 points with 7:17 remaining until half, off a made layup by sophomore guard Alexis Stubblefield from Chyna Steele. The Panthers were able to convert twelve points before the end of the half, while holding Cecil College to just two. The Seahawks headed into halftime with a 36-33 lead.

Foul trouble plagued the Seahawks in the second half, as starters Alexis Stubblefield and Nyjayha Lockwood found themselves with five fouls while three fellow Seahawks tallied four personal fouls. Throughout the contest, the Panthers converted 21 points off free throws and ended the game with a ten-point victory over Cecil College. Sophomore forward Chyna Steele recorded a double-double while Stubblefield and Lockwood contributed for a combined 21 points.

In the second conference contest of the night, freshman guard Cornell Corbin drained a shot from beyond the arc just thirty seconds into the game to give the Seahawks an early lead. Unable to hold on, this would be the only lead the Seahawks would have for the remainder of the match up. A competitive first half included a monster dunk from Cornell Corbin off a Jordan Griggs' assist. Corbin converted his free throw into a 3-point play, allowing the Seahawks back within six points with 4:00 remaining in the first half.

The Panthers shot an impressive 54% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc, compared to the Seahawks' 41.5% and 27.3% comparision, resulting in Cecil College's ten-point loss. Corbin led the Seahawks in scoring with 21 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Freshman guard Jonathon Falko contributed 14 points, four assists, and two steals while Jordan Griggs and Greg Alexander tallied a combined 21 points.

Cecil College basketball will return to action on Saturday, January 27 for another conference showdown against the Cougars of Frederick Community College. Tip offs are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Cecil College.
