Seahawks Honor Sophomores, Split Finale
NORTH EAST - With an eye on the postseason, Cecil College softball honored the Sophomore Class of 2025 in Sunday's regular season finale.
Katarina Kuchera, Natalie Cook, Briana Rebman, and Amaia Smith were recognized in a pre-game ceremony. Kuchera and Cook spent two seasons with the Seahawks, while Rebman and Smith transfered to Cecil this season.
The Seahawks would then take the field, picking up a win in game one over Allegany before falling to the Trojans in the endcap.
Cecil finishes the regular season 18-12, with a 9-9 mark against Region 20 Division 2 opponents.
Game One - Cecil 7, Allegany 6
Cecil's Tristan Canavan and Katarina Kuchera came up clutch in the opener, allowing the Seahawks to top Allegany.
Canavan's three-run home run jump-started Cecil's offense in the opening frame. Allegany scored one in the second, but an error and an RBI single alloowed Cecil to plate two more and give them a 5-1 lead after two. The Trojans did not stay down for long, scoring five runs in the top of the third after a fielding error extended the inning.
Canavan stepped up and tied the game in the sixth, driving home Gianna Dougherty to make it 6-6. The Seahawks ran themselves out of the inning, allowing Allegany to avoid any further damage.
Amaia Smith kept Allegany off the board in the fifth, giving Cecil a chance to take the lead. Smith led off the bottom of the frame with a single to right and was eventually moved over after the Trojans committed a fielding error. Madison Nolan stepped to the dish looking to move over runners, but the freshman infielder turned a sacrifice bunt into a single to load the bases.
With the Seahawks threatening, Allegany took out the next batter via strikeout. This brought up Kuchera, who battled through a long at-bat before shooting a ball deep enough to right to allow Smith to score and give Cecil the lead.
Smith (7-6) silenced the Trojans' offense over the final two innings, allowing just one hit before sending the visitors packing.
Game Two - Allegany 14, Cecil 3
The Seahawks struggled at the dish in game two, recording just three runs on four hits.
Briana Rebman, Madison Nolan, and Kylee Straining picked up the three RBI. Sloane Tanner tripled and scored a run.
Gianna Dougherty (11-5) was tagged with the loss from the circle.
