Catamounts Hand Seahawks Two Region Losses

The Catamounts of Potomac State College of WBU handed the Seahawks two losses in Region XX DII play on Saturday. Potomac State currently sits at the top of the Region XX standings with a 2-0 record while Cecil College ranks fourth with a 6-2 record on the region. Cecil College remains unbeaten in conference play but falls to 7-3 overall.

The Catamounts had a hot 3-0 start in the top of the first inning before the lead-off hitters for the Seahawks were able to quickly tie the game. Freshman third basemen Kelly Porte started the Seahawks with a single and was brought home off an RBI-single from freshman second basemen Rachel Durham. Olivia Martin was able to execute a sacrifice fly to bring Durham home and freshman pitcher Emily Phillips singled to bring in Carly White, after reaching the bases on a Catamounts' error, to tie the game 3-3 after the first inning of play.

The Seahawks were defensivley unable to stop the Catamounts' bats for the remaining innings as Cecil gave up a three-run homer in the top of the second to give the Catamounts a 6-4 lead. Sophomore center fielder Olivia Martin was able to counter with a home run of her own. Another RBI-single from Kelly Porte that helped Aleshia Shires cross the plate were the only remaining runs scored by the Seahawks, as they fell 11-5 to Potomac State in game one.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Emily Phillips was given the loss for the Seahawks after pitching all seven innings, giving up eleven runs on eleven hits while striking out four batters. Rachel Durham went 3-4 for the Seahawks with 1 RBI and currently leads the team with a .647 AVG.

Game two was much of the same as the Seahawks could not keep up with the Catamounts' bats. Potomac State held the Seahawks scoreless in the first two inngings after scoring four runs themselves. Olivia Martin lead the Seahawks statiscally in game two after going 3-3 with two RBI's followed by Carly White and Rachel Durham with two hits each. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Shannon Shivery also had a hit and batted in two runs for the Seahawks in the 17-5 loss in six innings of game two.

Cecil College softball returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 as they travel to face the Hawks of Hagerstown Community College in a conference match up. The first pitch of the double header is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
