Seahawks Upset No. 10 Monroe College

NORTH EAST, Md. - Cecil's strong play at home continued on Sunday afternoon, as Dominick Carrington's late three-pointer sealed a stunning 78-76 victory over NJCAA Division I No. 10 Monroe College.

The Mustangs of Monroe had not lost since early December, dropping back-to-back road contests down in Florida. They had won 12 straight games since, including a 30-point win over undefeated DI #23 Harcum last week.

Cecil jumped on Monroe early and outscored the Mustangs 16-4 in the opening five and a half minutes. The Seahawks maintained a double-digit lead until the 8:06 mark in the half, when a Mustang three cut their deficit to nine. Both offenses had plenty to say over the final eight minutes, but Monroe would go into the break with momentum after slicing Cecil's lead down to three before the halftime buzzer sounded.

The Seahawks and Mustangs continued to trade blows out of the break, as both teams nursed small leads at times before the other took over. A Monroe layup with 1:13 left to play put the visitors in the driver's seat late.

After the Monroe make, Cecil came back down the court and looked for Carrington (23 points, six assists) to put them back on top. The sophomore guard's first trey clanked off the rim, but a trailing Frank Toney (16 points, eight rebounds) retrieved the rebound after the ball was tipped into his hands. Toney reset the Seahawks offense, then found Carrington again for his eventual game winning three.

Cecil improves to 13-10 on the year after the win.
