Seahawks Dominate the Paint, Sink Vikings

NORTH EAST, Md. - Cecil men's basketball picked up its third straight win Saturday, sinking the Mercer County Vikings 69-64 on day one of the Cecil Mixer.

The Seahawks controlled the painted area all game, outscoring (32-12) and outrebounding (50-27) the Vikings down low. Mercer County kept it close early by draining eight threes in the first half, but shot 4-for-14 from distance as they fell out of the game in the final 20 minutes.

Four Cecil players ended the contest in double figures. Vernon Simmons led all Seahawks with a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds). He was flanked by Darrien Berrios Rivera's 12 points off the bench, 11 points from fellow reserve Marlon Lewis, and 10 via sophomore guard Dominick Carrington.

Cecil improves to 3-3 on the year.

Turning Point

A three-pointer by Mercer County's Deon Sanders tied the game at 62-62 with just under four minutes to go. Cecil responded with a 7-2 run to rip back the lead one last time and come away with the win. Berrios Rivera scored five of the Seahawks seven points during this stretch, including a three to spark the run with 1:39 left to play.
