Seahawks Hold Off Lakers' Comeback At Buzzer

Cecil College men's basketball held off a comeback attempt by the Lakers of Garrett College to secure an 86-84 conference and Region XX DII victory. The Seahawks have now won eight of their last nine contests to improve to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in MD JUCO.

The Seahawks currently occupy the 10th spot in the conference standings out of 15 men's basketball programs. In their last eight wins, three of their victories have been against NJCAA Region XX DII opponents.

Cecil College led by as many as thirteen in the contest but the Lakers would chip away at their defecit until both teams found themselves trading ties and leads in the final minutes of the contest. The Lakers found themselves with a deadball under their own basket with 20.4 seconds remaining in the contest and down by two points. Garrett created an open three-point attempt and were able to recover an offensive rebound and put back, tieing the game at 84 and stopping the clock with 9.4 seconds left.

With an opportunity to win the game, the Seahawks stormed down the court and missed a contested lay up attempt. Despite missing their first attempt, sophomore forward Shylier Ringgold was able to tip-in the game winning basket to give Cecil College a two-point advantage with just over one second on the clock. With hopes of sending the game into overtime, the Lakers called for a full-timeout but were unable to execute their game plan as time expired.

Freshman guard Jacob Falko lead in scoring with 17 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out 5 assists, and forced three Lakers' turnovers in the victory. Freshman forward Khalid Gates came off the bench for the Seahawks and tallied 16 points, including going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Starters Cornell Corbin and Shylier Ringgold combined for 29 points and 14 rebounds, including the game winner from Ringgold.

Cecil College men's basketball looks to pick up another conference and region division victory when they return to action on their home court against the Howard Community College Dragons. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Janaury 26.
