After a rough start to their season, which included a seven-game losing streak, Cecil College men's basketball picked up their first conference victory of the season over Chesapeake College for their fourth straight victory on their home court. The Seahawks improve to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in MD JUCO play.
The first half of play between the Seahawks and Skipjacks was competitive and both teams were faced with six different ties and four different lead changes in the first twenty minutes of action. Darrell Jenkins opened up scoring for the Seahawks with a made basket from beyond the arc, dished out by Hassan Corbin, just fifteen seconds into the match. Either team only led my as many as four points as they traded places on top until Cecil headed into the break with a 32-30 advantage.
The Seahawks came out of the locker room and made the first basket of the second half and eventually extended their lead to as many as 27 points. The Seahawks were able to convert the Skipjacks' 20 turnovers into 27 points of their own and scored 18 of their points of second chances. Comparitively, Cecil College only have up two points off their own turnovers and six points off second chances. The Seahawks also scored 10 baskets off assists compared to the Skipjacks' five assists.
Freshman guard Jacob Falko led in scoring with 18 points and now leads the squad while averaging 12.7 points per game in his first year as a Seahawk. Falko also added four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Sophomore guard Kamden Stubblefield scored a season-high 16 points while shooting 54% from the floor and five rebounds. Cecil College has won the last four games in which Stubblefield has been a starter.
Darell Johnson, Carl Bradley, and McKale Williams also recorded double-digit points in the victory. Williams went 2-4 from beyond the arc and currently leads the team with a 50.8% three-point percentage, which lands him second in the conference behind Harford's Naquan Williams-Day.
The Seahawks' win streak will be tested on the road when they travel to CCBC Dundalk on Wednesday, January 9. Each team is looking to pick up their second conference victory. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
