Men's Basketball Drops Two in Rochester, N.Y.

The Cecil College men's basketball team traveled back to campus from the Murph Shapiro Classic in Rochester, Ny. with two losses against non-conference opponents Monroe Community College and Jamestown Community College. The Seahawks fall to 1-4 overall to start the 2017 season.

Men's basketball continued to struggle with shot percentage after shooting only 28.4% against Monroe and 31.9% against Jamestown, for a current average of 70.6 points per game through five competitions. In the first game of the weekend, Cecil College was able to hold on to a lead for the majority of the game, until the Tribunes went on a 10-0 run with about twelve minutes remaining in regulation. Unable to restore their lead, the Tribunes topped the Seahawks by a score of 82-69. Freshman guard Cornell Corbin and forward Keyon Givens led the way for the Seahawks with 13 points each, followed by Jordan Griggs coming off the bench.

Similarly, the Seahawks and Jayhawks of Jamestown Community College headed into halftime with a 3-point lead in favor of the Jayhawks. In the final minutes of competition, the Seahawks were forced to foul, but the Jayhawks converted  21 of their 26 second-half free throws and hit clutch three-pointers to seal the 73-64 victory. Jordan Griggs tallied 15 points for the Seahawks, including going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Greg Alexander added 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and two blocks.

The Seahawks return to action with hopes of capturing their first conference victory against the Cardinals of CCBC Catonsville. The Cardinals are coming off a three-game losing streak before facing the Seahawks in their home-opener. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Catonsville, Md.
