Baseball Earns Two Region Wins But Suffers Losses to Division I Fighting Owls

The Cecil College baseball team had an action-packed weekend with back-to-back double-headers against Anne Arundel Community College on Saturday, April 2 and Harford Community College on Sunday, April 3. The Seahawks earned two key NJCAA Region 20 DII wins over the Riverhawks on Saturday but tallied two losses from the Owls Sunday.

In the first game on Saturday, the Seahawks were in a tight battle with the Riverhawks but came away with the 5-4 victory in seven innings. Freshman pitcher Kyle Stively started on the mound for Cecil going for four innings and allowing three earned runs. Sophomore pitcher Tyler Brown came in as a reliever and shut down the Riverhawks bats. Brown went three innings, allowing only one hit, and striking out five batters. Sophomore DH Brandon Snyder went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win. Freshman third baseman Lane Weismiller went 2-for-3 with one run scored. In the loss for the Riverhawks, right fielder Matt Johnson went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

In the second game, Cecil defeated Anne Arundel Community College 5-4 again. Freshman pitcher Dylan Byler was dominant in the start for the Seahawks going six innings, allowing one earned run, and striking out a season-high 11 batters. Sophomore shortstop Nathan Ewing went 2-for-3 with three RBI and freshman second baseman Nathan Fusco-Lomont sealed with win in the bottom of the sixth inning with his first career home run. In the loss, AACC center fielder Nicholas Toskov went 2-for-4 with a home run to left field.

In Sunday's first game, Cecil and Harford were tied scoreless until the Fighting Owls erupted with seven runs in the bottom of the third and ended up winning 10-2. Freshman pitcher Rafael Solano suffered the loss for the Seahawks going 2.1 IP giving up five earned runs. In the loss, freshman second baseman Dylan Byler and sophomore center fielder Patrick O'Brien each went 2-for-3 at the plate. For the Fighting Owls, starting pitcher Zack Oswald earned the win going five innings, allowing one earned run, and striking out nine.

In the second game, Cecil's bats struggled only tallying three hits in the duration of the game. The Fighting Owls dominant pitching from Connor Blantz helped seal the victory 8-0. In the loss, freshman DH Garrett Worthington went 1-for-4 that included his fifth double of the season. Sophomore shortstop Nathan Ewing went 1-for-3 in the game. For the Fighting Owls, first baseman Nick Gaitan went 3-for-3 with three RBI which included a home run.

The Cecil College baseball team next game is a double header Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to WVU Potomac State College for a non-division Region 20 match-up.
