Homeruns Lift Seahawks over Dundalk Lions

Cecil College baseball defeated the Lions of CCBC Dundalk by the 10-run rule through eight innings. The Seahawks scored six of their 13 runs off three homeruns from Dave Villafance (2) and Giovanni Santiago, while batting .419 as a team.

With the single win over CCBC Dundalk, the Seahawks improve their NJCAA Region XX DII record to 7-5 and move up to the fifth spot in the region division standings out of nine baseball programs. The Seahawks also improve to 10-22 overall and 7-12 in MD JUCO play.

Tuesday's match up started out with the Lions scoring the first run of the game, unearned, off an error by Seahawks' third basemen Andrew Schutt. This would be one of the three runs the Seahawks' defense would allow, holding them scoreless again until the top of the fifth inning.

The Seahawks got their offense rolling in the bottom of the second inning as Jordan Yoder led off with a double. Andrew Schutt hit an additional double, bringing Yoder home. Michael Worthington completed a successful sacrifice fly to bring Schutt home for their second run before the end of the inning.

The Lions held the Seahawks scoreless in the third but were unable to contain their bats in the bottom of the fourth. Andrew Schutt tallied his second double of the game and was brought home shorty after off an RBI-single from first basemen Tyler Robinson. Michael Worthington followed up with another Seahawks' double, and a single from Joseph Murray advanced Tyler Robinson across the plate. Both were brought home after Joseph Bagnerise II reached first on a two RBI-single. The Seahawks scored their eight and ninth runs of the game when designated hitter David Villafane homered over the left field fence bringing Giovanni Santiago, who reached previously on a walk, and himself home before the end of the fourth inning.

CCBC Dunalk tallied a run in each of the next two innings but could never match the momentum of the Seahawks. Cecil College ended the game in the eighth inning with four runs on three hits, inlcuding two two-run homers from Giovanni Santiago and David Villafane, his second of the contest.

Center fielder Joseph Murray went 3-for-3 for the Seahawks and scored two runs in the win over the Lions. Three members of the Seahawks' offense - Shawn Dulin, Tyler Robinson, and Michael Worthington - sucessfully completed sacrifice flies.

Sophomore pitcher Troy Thomas picked up the win for the Seahawks after pitching six complete innings with six stikeouts. Thomas gave up one earned run in the conference and region division victory.

Cecil College baseball returns to action on Thursday, April 19 when they travel to Delaware Technical Community College of a single, non-conference and non-region game. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
